Pride month was full for Fabled Asp. We produced or collaborated in eight fabulous events ranging from the Queer Cultural Arts Festival’s Chronotopia, to Dominika Bednarska’s one-woman show. We received a “creating queer community commission” from the National Queer Arts Festival to produce our 3rd annual Krip Salon and lots of love from all of our varied communities.
Morningstar Vancil’s closed captioned digital story played to great reviews at QWOCMAP and we loved seeing it on the big screen. Check it out under projects/digital stories.

THE DYKE March celebrated Fabled Asp and 2010 as the Year of the Disabled Dyke!
Early History of Fabled ASP
Fabled ASP and the work of the disabled lesbian movement originated in San Francisco. This work has changed the world. Ricky Boden (who has already been interviewed) started the first disabled lesbian support groups at Operation Concern (now New Leaf) in San Francisco.
The women in those support groups went on to make major innovations in the history of San Francisco, the larger Bay Area and the world. Laura Bock started “Fat Lip;” Silvia Kohan (deceased) wrote "Fat Girl Blues;" others in our community authored the pioneering anthology, “With the Power of Each Breath.” They collaborated to form the satirical theater group “Wry Crips (a play on words Rye Crisps),” and created the world-renowned AXIS Dance troupe.
Fabled Asp Founders-Laura Rifkin and Jill Lessing along with Diane Sabin started the first Special Needs Services for the Lesbian/Gay Freedom Day Parade, which has opened access to one of the City’s most famous and important events. Mayors of San Francisco have recognized Fabled Asp founders in proclamations for this ground-breaking work. Other disabled lesbians outside the support groups created major innovations in politics, cultural work and civil rights movements.
Political activism specific to lesbians with disability was born.
Most of our history has gone undocumented in any archive.
.
Fabled ASP’s mission is to collect, document, archive and celebrate the innovative art, culture and history of the S.F. Bay Area disabled lesbian community and movement from the civil rights era to the present.
By combining storytelling and filmmaking techniques, we are documenting and continuing the revolution in disability arts, aesthetics and culture.
